Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you might want to know about Crayon Rocks, from safety and materials to sizing and everyday use.

Safety & materials

Are Crayon Rocks lead-free and safe?

Yes. Crayon Rocks are tested and certified to meet ASTM D-4236, ASTM F963 toy safety standards, CPSIA, and EN71 European toy safety standards.

All testing was conducted by Bureau Veritas, an internationally recognized product testing organization. They are certified lead-free and non-toxic.

Are Crayon Rocks non-toxic?

Yes. They are non-toxic and meet all required toy safety standards in the United States and Europe. Every crayon sold as a children’s toy in the U.S. must meet ASTM standards, and Crayon Rocks meet additional international standards as well.

Are Crayon Rocks a choking hazard?

Like all small objects, crayons can pose a choking hazard if placed in the mouth, so Crayon Rocks are recommended for children ages 3 and up.

They should only be used by children who understand crayons are not food. They are non-toxic, but adult supervision is always recommended for young children.

Are Crayon Rocks vegan?

Yes. Crayon Rocks are vegan, made with soy wax and natural mineral pigments.

Is the soy wax non-GMO?

The soy wax is not labeled as non-GMO. Crayon Rocks use high-quality soy wax that meets all safety standards for children’s products.

Are Crayon Rocks hollow or solid?

Crayon Rocks are solid. That makes them durable, slow to wear down, and less likely to break than traditional stick crayons.

What size are Crayon Rocks?

Each one measures approximately 1¾ in × ¾ in × ¾ in. They hold about the same amount of wax as a traditional crayon, in a compact, ergonomic shape.

Aren’t Crayon Rocks too small for young children?

No. The size was carefully developed with input from special education teachers and occupational therapists. The shape and size are designed for children ages 3 to 8 to encourage a tripod grip, the same grip used for handwriting.

Why is there a small hole on the bottom?

Wax shrinks slightly as it cools during production. The small hole simply marks the spot that cools last, and is a normal part of the manufacturing process.

What is the dusty haze sometimes seen on the crayons?

This is called bloom. It is common with soy-based products (similar to what you may see on chocolate) and occurs naturally due to the fats in soy wax. Once the crayon is used, the bloom usually disappears.

Where are Crayon Rocks made?

They are proudly made in Hestand, Kentucky, USA, in a small workshop in rural Kentucky.

Using & care

Are Crayon Rocks washable?

They behave like traditional crayons. In most cases color can be removed from smooth surfaces and many fabrics, but they are not marketed as fully washable. As with any crayon, staining may occur depending on the material.

Do Crayon Rocks work on cardboard as well as paper?

Yes. They color well on paper, cardboard, and similar surfaces, just like traditional crayons.

Can Crayon Rocks be used to mark glass or metal?

They can mark smooth surfaces like glass or metal, but are not designed for it. Marks can usually be wiped away from smooth surfaces with a cloth.
