Our Story

Small Tools.
Big Developmental Impact.

Crayon Rocks are thoughtfully designed to support how children’s hands are meant to grow, move, and create. What started in a classroom became a simple, powerful way to build writing, coordination, and confidence through play.

How it all started

From one classroom to little hands everywhere

Crayon Rocks were created by Barbara Lee, a special education teacher who spent years working with students who struggled with handwriting and fine motor control. Guided by occupational therapists, she learned that handwriting success hinges on one early skill: a strong tripod grip.

There were plenty of crayons on the market, but none designed to support how young hands should hold and control a writing tool.

So Barbara decided to design one herself.

After years of testing and refinement, she created a soft soy wax crayon with a unique pebble shape, one that naturally guides the thumb, index, and middle fingers into a proper grip.

Designed on purpose

Why they work

Built for healthy development

Their pebble-like shape discourages fist grips and gently guides the thumb, index, and middle fingers into a healthy tripod grip, strengthening the muscles kids need for handwriting and everyday tasks. Trusted in classrooms and therapy settings for a wide range of learners.

Made from clean materials

No petroleum paraffin here. Crayon Rocks are U.S.-grown soy wax blended with plant-based waxes and non-toxic pigments, with a natural mineral core that gives each one its structure, smooth blending, and rich, controllable color.

Where they’re made

Made with care

1

A California garage

It began small: colors mixed by hand and each crayon carefully formed in small batches.

2

A machine of their own

As demand grew, a custom machine was built to produce every rock consistently and responsibly.

3

Rural Kentucky, since 2010

Production moved to Kentucky, where the rocks are still made with care, intention, and attention to detail.
